NATURAL DURABILITY
Ipe wood, in laboratory tests, has proven to be highly resistant to attack by xylophagus organisms (fungi and termites).
In an experiment carried out in a marine environment it was moderately attacked by drilling organisms. In a field test, with piles in contact with the ground, it showed an average life of 8 to 9 years. In practical observations, it is considered very resistant to rot.
WORKABILITY
Moderately difficult to work with, especially with hand tools which quickly lose their sharpness. Receives a good finish. Gluing problems are reported. The planning is regular, easy to sand and excellent for nailing and screwing.
APLICATIONS
External heavy: bridges, railway sleeves, crossings, fenders.
Heavy internal: beams, raisers.
Light frames: doors, windows, stops.
Internal light, decorative: trim, plinths, linings, wainscoting, boards, sticks, parkings, stair steps and decorative parts of furniture.
Other uses: sporting articles and toys, tool handles, agricultural implements, turned parts, transportation, musical instruments or parts thereof.
